Going to overseed the lawn this spring, thinking early April ( I live in Wisconsin ) My lawn is 1 yr old and is 80% filled in so I am trying to seed the rest of the bare patches. I am going to use a slit seeder, thinking Billy goat or Blue bird depending on what is the best. Looking for advice on application as well as which slit seeder is the best to use?Over seeding my lawn this spring, going to use a slit seeder, Looking for advice for best application.?
A slit seeder would work best since it breaks soil surface allowing easier (and more rapid) germination of seed.
You want to wait until the soil temp reaches at least 45 deg. for cool season grasses. Use a mix of perennial rye w/ tall fescue.
The slit seeder will usually have specific instructions to the amount of seed you will need. I would estimate 3-4 lbs/1000 sqft. Given the fact your lawn is 80% covered, you will use a lower setting.
If you have a problem with crabgrass in your area you may want to wait until Sept.Over seeding my lawn this spring, going to use a slit seeder, Looking for advice for best application.?
I don't know which machine is better but there both good brands, when applying use a grid pattern and do heavy on the seed it's cheap, don't forget to starter fert and make sure to keep the lawn moist for 2 weeks, also don,t mow until grass is bending over on its self
I had the same question but don't live in Wisc and I simply asked a local lawn treatment company what they would use! I actually asked 2 of them and got the same answer as they know more about that stuff than anyone...hope this helps!
