My sister has worked at her job for over 3 years. A benefit she has is PTO/sick hours. The other day she was sick and called in. She very rarely calls in. The next day she felt better and went to work. When she got there, the boss sent her home. The boss told her she didn't know if she was coming to work or not since she did not call and let them know and a replacement was found for her for that day. My sister did not break policy, the policy book says if someone calls in sick, they are to call in 2 hours before their shift begins. My sister called in 5 hours before her shift began. What should she do?My sister called me all upset. What's the best advice I can give her about this situation?
some thing is definately wrong here , your sister was correct about phoning in , so legally she should get paid, usually it works like this. if you ring in sick then do it asap(which she did) then the employer should presume that your sister will be coming in the next day unless she rings up again to say she is still ill. so tell her not to worry about it and if her employer doesnt pay her then get her to threaten legal actionMy sister called me all upset. What's the best advice I can give her about this situation?
I hope she has a union and can contact a representative, I had a health problem a couple years ago and was severely harrassed by my supervisor daily. I had to go on some long term leave to get her off my back.
If she is a good worker and doesn't call in on a regular basis I wonder what is going on at her job.
Is she over 50? I see employees getting raw deals because of age all the time. It isn't a matter of the work output as much as they could save money by replacing you with a cheaper younger version.
If she has an employee handbook I suggest she go over the call in part with a fine-tooth comb to see if she followed the rules exactly as required.
Is the boss new? Maybe they assumed she would be out three days and wanted to plan accordingly. I used to call off one day and go in the next with my co-workers making fun of me.....3 days is one incident and paid with no consequences and a perfect attendence day is one paid day every 6 months.
I hope she can resolve this issue with her boss and see why she was not expected to come in.
go to HR in the company if it's a big company her boss just might be an @ss and not like her. If it's a small company her boss could be right because he/she makes the policy on the fly.
